Demolition and Structures

Demolition, due to its inherent difficulties, demands comprehensive site specific studies as well as close follow up and monitoring.  It is our task to mitigate risks associated with dismantling complex structures. Our multidisciplinary group of professional engineers combines structural engineering background with geotechnical and environmental experience, to assess structures/develop suitable methodology and carry out pre and post condition surveys – all in compliance with current health and safety regulations.

Geo-Technical

The group’s activities include reviews of conceptual drawings followed by subsurface investigations.  A summary report presents, based on encountered subsurface conditions, shoring, and excavation, dewatering and foundation recommendations.  The required instrumentation, monitoring and finite element modelling of adjacent structures/groundwater regime is carried out, while site inspections and working meetings ensure that a substructure is constructed without delays, extra costs and more importantly a long term liability.

Geo-Environmental

We insist that the initial subsurface information, generated by boreholes/in situ testing and monitoring equipment, is administered, collectively, with the geotechnical group.  This is especially important during the pre-purchase/due diligence period when time is very much of the essence, and when costs of foundations, dewatering and site decommissioning are often the decisive feasibility factors.  We complete, upon site purchase, our services by providing Designated Substance Survey/Demolition Report followed by a site clean up and filing of a Record of Site Condition.

Geo-Hydrological

The need for temporary site dewatering and installation of a permanent drainage system usually triggers permit issues.  The group prepares dewatering specifications and permit applications, documents pumping tests, monitors groundwater regime, prepares computer modeling of potential settlement due to dewatering and provides calculations for sizing of a permanent drainage system.

Geo-Thermal

We have been providing “ground source information” for geothermal systems for the last twenty years.  Until recently, most systems were installed on institutional/commercial buildings and private homes.  The latest development is towards high rise condominium projects, and we have participated in the first such installation in the GTA.  In addition to geotechnical and geohydrological assessments, our group provides geothermal, in situ and laboratory investigations, including thermal and hydraulic conductivity parameters.  The firm utilizes state of the art in situ thermal testing equipment and corroborates field results with laboratory tests and ground modeling.

Inspection and Testing

Inspection and testing, we call it IT, represent more than 50% of our revenues.  This figure is indicative of the level of control we like to exercise over a construction process and reflects the fact that most of extra costs and long term liability issues are related to underground works.  Our field people are seasoned professionals and are vehemently supported by our very experienced engineers.  We do encourage you to consult the development/design/construction industry about our undivided attention to your project needs.

Tunneling

MCR supports tunnel projects through soil/rock investigation, description of subsurface geotechnical and environmental conditions and provides design/construction recommendations for tunnels, shafts, excavation support and other underground sructures.  MCR works with the sate-of-the-art software for finite element three dimensional analysis of groundwater-soil-structure interaction.  MCR carries out design/design reviews of underground structures, especially tunnel and shaft supports and lining systems, temporary shoring and retaining structures.
